The team at the British Consulate in Guangzhou (Guangdong) have pulled together a fascinating infographic that shows China's provincial GDP and their international equivalents.
For instance, Shanghai's GDP is equivalent to that of Poland whilst Guangdong's is to that of Canada's. Do have a look at the graphic below which shows both provincial GDP and GDP per capita alongside their country/regional equivalents.

CBI member, Baillie Gifford, has announced that it has registered a new wholly-owned China unit to manage non-retail funds.
According to a press release issued on Wednesday, Baillie Gifford has registered Baillie Gifford Investment Management (Shanghai) Limited, as a private securities fund manager with the Asset Management Association of China (AMAC). The bank has also received a private fund manager (PFM) licence, that allows it to invest in China’s financial markets on behalf of Chinese institutions and affluent investors.
Amy Wang, Baillie Gifford’s head of China, said that the company had also obtained the required qualifications to conduct business under China’s Qualified Domestic Limited Partnership (QDLP) programme, and would consider other opportunities as China’s market opens. The QDLP programme allows foreign asset managers to raise yuan funds from institutional and high-net-worth individuals for overseas investments. In the statement, Baillie Gifford also announced that it has plans to apply for an investment advisory licence, that would give them access to a broader range of institutions.
Edinburgh-based Baillie Gifford manages $324 billion in assets, including more than $50 billion invested in Chinese companies.
British Airways will resume flights from Shanghai to London from Saturday, 26 September 2020, with tickets on sale on ba.com from today.
The Shanghai Pudong to London Heathrow route will operate each Saturday and Tuesday, providing greater choice for customers in mainland China who want to travel to the UK. The London Heathrow to Shanghai Pudong route relaunched on 9 August, operating on Thursdays and Sundays.

“Following the relaunch of our London to Shanghai route, this is more good news for customers who have been waiting to be reunited with friends and family and to resume their employment and studies. We are extremely glad to be able to once again offer a full return service between the UK and China."
British Business Awards 2020 applications closed last Friday on 14 August. We are glad to see this year’s Awards have received a strong selection of high-class applications across all ten award categories.
In the following week, each award’s judging panel will vet the applications and select five finalists per category. The finalists will be announced on 3 September. Further interviews will be arranged in September and the winners will be revealed at the Gala Dinner in Shanghai on 29 October.

CBI member, CPP Group, has announced that it has extended its agreement with Bank of Communications Pacific Credit Card Centre in Shanghai to help customers whose payment cards go missing.
This announcement builds on a relationship started in 2018, and follows a competitive tender process.
Bank of Communications (Bocomm) is currently ranked at 150 on the Fortune Global 500 list of most valuable companies and has issued more than 150 million debit cards and 70 million credit cards in China.
CPP is providing customers of Bocomm with theft and loss protection to help guard themselves from financial losses.
Wilson Chan, chief executive of CPP Group China, said: “We are delighted to have earned the endorsement of one of the biggest banks in China […] Bocomm rightly expects very high levels of customer service and to win a three-year partnership says a lot about the success of our relationship up to now.”
Jason Walsh, CPP Group chief executive, said: “Our China operation has built an excellent portfolio of partners and it is terrific to see new relationships like this one with Bocomm become firmly established […] We’re protecting 300,000 Bocomm customers after less than 18 months working together so we hope to increase that base significantly over the next three years.”
Spencer Yang, from Bocomm’s Pacific Credit Card Centre, said: “Helping our customers at important moments such as losing a payment card is a vital connection point to our bank so this service must be delivered seamlessly.
“CPP Group China has lived up to that standard and we’re looking forward to building an even stronger partnership following this contract extension.”
CBI member, BMW, has announced that it is building a new innovation hub in Shanghai in partnership with Alibaba.
In a press statement released last Friday, BMW outlined how it hoped that the two companies could form a strategic alliance, by harnessing their respective strengths and resources, to explore enhanced cooperation between BMW and Chinese tech start-ups focusing on the internet and cars.
BMW will offer affiliated start-ups technical training and consulting services, while also providing office space for at least 30 companies, and financial docking services for no less than 20 enterprises or teams.
Jochen Goller, president and CEO of BMW China, said: "The auto industry is undergoing a major transformation driven by technological development […] in the midst of industrial upgrading and transformation, we need to keep an open mind and to collaborate with outstanding Chinese innovation powerhouses in order to scale new technologies for future mobility."
Ren Geng, vice-president of Alibaba, said: "The base's establishment underscores the innovative forces driving future mobility. With the joint efforts of our partners, we are offering an open innovation incubation ecosystem to accelerate the growth of the start-ups."
