CBI MAKES THE CASE FOR BRITISH BUSINESS IN CHINA

The CBI’s Director-General is visiting China this week on a trade visit with the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Theresa May.

Carolyn Fairbairn, CBI Director-General, said:

UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) Inward Investment Report 2013/14

 

U.K.Trade & Investment (UKTI) recently released its Inward Investment Report 2013/14.

Highlights include:

• During the 2013/14 financial year, the U.K. attracted the most inward investment projects since records began in the 1980s.

• In total, 1,773 investment projects were set up by foreign businesses, up 14% on last year.

• These projects are estimated to bring with them over 111,000 new ans safeguarded jobs.

• The leading industry group for both projects and jobs was advanced manufacturing.

China's Ministry of Commerce clears Penguin & Random House merger

 

 

CBI member Pearson and Bertelsmann recently announced that China's Ministry of Commerce had cleared the planned merger between Penguin and Random House without conditions.

This follows regulatory approval in the U.S., Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa. The two companies announced their agreement to combine Penguin and Random House in October 2012 and expect to close the transaction in July.

Following completion, Bertelsmann will own 53% and Pearson 47% of Penguin Random House. It will encompass all of Random House and Penguin Group's publishing units in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, India, and South Africa, as well as Penguin's operations in China and Random House's publishers in Spain and Latin America. Pearson and Bertelsmann believe that the combined organisation will have a stronger platform and greater resources to invest in rich content, new digital publishing models, and high-growth emerging markets.

EUCCC annual European Business position paper launched in China

Late last week The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC) released its European Business in China Position Paper 2012/2013.

The Position Paper intends to provide an overview of the current conditions in various sectors in China as well as detailed and constructive recommendations.

The 13th edition of the Position Paper was prepared through a six-month consultative process with hundreds of companies and includes 41 separate Working Group and Forum papers and eight city-specific papers covering Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Nanjing, Pearl River Delta, Shanghai, Shenyang, and Tianjin).

Pearson's 2012 China Education business hits the grade

CBI member Pearson recently released its interim results for the first half of 2012, reporting sales up 6% to £2.6 billion.

Pearson's sales in developing markets were up approximately 20%.

In China, Pearson's International Education business performed particularly strongly, with 57,100 students being enrolled at its Wall Street English centres, up 19% over the same period in 2011.

The growth was boosted by strong underlying demand and the launch of three new centres during the first half. Pearson's students in China continue to acquire high-level English skills, with average grade levels achieved by its students rising by 11% during the first half.

Global Education, Pearson's test preparation business, had a strong start to the year, with new enrolments growing 16% to 536,000 driven by increased demand for its online test preparation services.

Commenting on Pearson's first half results, Marjorie Scardino, Chief Executive of Pearson, said, "We began 2012 planning for a challenging external environment, and our caution was well-placed: conditions have been tough in the early part of this year and, for a couple parts of Pearson, tougher than expected. But that's precisely when our planning for structural change and our investments in growth markets show their power. We've kept up the pace of transformation and continued our shift towards digital and services businesses, which this year for the first time will yield the majority of Pearson's revenues. That strategy will enable us to deliver on our long-term goals of expanding our market opportunity, delivering consistently strong financial performance and helping all kinds of students in all kinds of places to learn."
