De Montfort University partners with Sunwah Foundation to open flagship business school

 

CBI member De Montfort University (DMU) announced that it plans to open a flagship business school on its U.K. campus thanks to its unique partnership with Hong Kong-based Sunwah Foundation.

The Dr. Jonathan KS Choi Business School will be based in the 800-year-old Leicester Castle in Leicester in the U.K., which is being refurbished specifically to house the new school. It will be a leading European business centre with an emphasis on entrepreneurship, the creative industries, and sports management.

The Dr. Jonathan KS Choi Business School will be home to stellar academics, world-class research, and aims to attract the brightest students from around the globe. A principal is being recruited now, and the first students will begin courses in 2016.

The business school is named after Dr. Jonathan KS Choi, owner of the multi-national conglomerate Sunwah Group, which is based in Hong Kong. Dr Choi has enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with DMU via the Sunwah International Business School, based at Liaoning University in mainland China.

Since 2004, DMU academic staff have worked with Liaoning University helping to prepare students for study in Leicester. This has resulted in more than 1,000 alumni working in China today with close links to DMU and Leicester.

Dr Choi said: “This innovative partnership between Sunwah, DMU, and Leicester City Council aims to create a world-class business school in the setting of Leicester Castle, one of Leicester’s most significant historical locations. It is my ambition that future global business leaders will be educated right here in the Leicester Castle.”

Professor Dominic Shellard, Vice-Chancellor of DMU, said the business school would be the university’s flagship, drawing on DMU’s core strengths in the creative industries and its global approach to education. He said, “Dr. Jonathan Choi is one of our university’s strongest supporters. Our shared vision of creating academic excellence that is recognised throughout the globe has led to the creation of the Dr Jonathan KS Choi Business School. The Great Hall of Leicester Castle is a landmark building which, with this innovative partnership between DMU, the City Mayor, and Sunwah, will be restored for the benefit of our staff and students, as well as for the citizens of Leicester.”

The business school will bring together students from around the world to learn the very best practices of education, business, and innovation from Europe and China. It will integrate closely with the university’s sector-leading #DMUglobal programme to offer students an international experience as part of their studies.

DMU will be the first UK university to embed actively a specific international experience into every undergraduate degree programme, preparing students for today’s increasingly global marketplace.

On a visit to DMU earlier this year, CBI Director-General John Cridland praised #DMUglobal, stating, “In a global economy, the ability to recruit talented graduates with an international outlook and foreign language skills will be vital to ambitious British businesses eager to export to new, dynamic markets across the world.”

New CBI President-Designate nominated

 

PAUL DRECHSLER CBE NOMINATED CBI PRESIDENT-DESIGNATE

The CBI today announced that Paul Drechsler, Chairman of diversified international firm Bibby Group, has been nominated to succeed Sir Mike Rake as President of the UK’s leading business group.

CBI members will be asked to endorse Mr Drechsler’s appointment as President at the annual general meeting on July 13^th. It follows his nomination by the Chairmen’s Committee in a process led by the current President Sir Mike Rake. 

The CBI President plays a leading role in the organisation’s advocacy work, meeting with ministers and senior civil servants, promoting UK business internationally and chairing the CBI Board. It is an unpaid appointment.

Commenting on Mr Drechsler’s nomination, Sir Mike Rake said:

“Paul brings with him an impressive breadth of experience of leading companies of all sizes across varied sectors operating internationally and domestically, and of public companies and privately-owned firms.

“He combines this with a passion and a drive to ensure that business is recognised as a force for good and at the heart of the community.

“Paul is a fantastic advocate for businesses of all sizes and will play a vital role in continuing to ensure the CBI’s voice is heard loud and clear on the economic and political issues that affect growth and jobs, including reform of the European Union and devolution.”

Commenting on his nomination, Mr Drechsler added:

“This is a critically important time for the economy with plenty of challenges ahead. I look forward to continuing Sir Mike’s excellent work with CBI members and politicians to boost jobs and growth across all UK businesses, regions and nations.

“The coming months will be dominated by the prospect of an EU referendum and my focus will be on working with businesses and the Government to champion ambitious reform to ensure the EU delivers for businesses and citizens at home and on the Continent.

“While EU reform is top of the agenda, we mustn’t lose track of other important growth priorities, including ensuring we have an education system that addresses skills shortages and enables all young people to have fulfilling careers.

“I will also focus on securing the high-quality infrastructure the UK needs to compete on the world stage and ensuring growing firms can access the range of finance options they need to thrive.”

Mr Drechsler is currently Chairman of Bibby Line Groupwhich is headquartered in Liverpool. Before that he was Chief Executive of the privately-owned construction firm Wates Group. He joined Wates in September 2004 and became Chairman and Chief Executive in April 2006 until 2014.

Prior to joining Wates, Mr Drechsler worked for ICI PLC, spending the first ten years of his career on Teesside. That was followed by 14 years holding various senior positions and living in Brazil, the USA and the Netherlands, which concluded with five years as Chief Executive of one of ICI’s principal international businesses and as a Main Board Director (1998-2003).

He is also Chairman of the board of the charity Teach First and Chairman of the National Skills Funding Agency. He is a board member of Business in the Community and Chairman of its Education Leadership Team.

Mr Drechsler has also been recognised for his outstanding leadership, winning KPMG Chief Executive of the Year for the construction industry and PwC ‘Private Company, Chief Executive of the Year’. During his tenure at the helm, Wates Group won the Business in the Community Company of the Year and the J.P. Morgan Best UK Family Business Award.

Mr Drechsler has been a member of the CBI Board since 2012 and was Chairman of the CBI Energy Policy Committee between 2007 and 2012 and a member of the Chairmen’s Committee.

In February 2015, he was honoured by Her Majesty, The Queen with an Honorary CBE for services to the construction industry.

Mr Drechsler graduated from the University of Dublin, Trinity College, with an (Honours) degree in Engineering Science. He is married with three children.

U.K. Business Secretary urges business to support Generation U.K. in China

 

  

Today, U.K. Business Secretary Vince Cable will urge business leaders to support a drive to double the number of U.K. exchange students who travel to China as part of plans to boost trade links.

In a letter to FTSE 100 U.K. CEOs, Mr. Cable will call upon businesses to support Generation U.K., the British Council's flagship programme, which aims to see 80,000 U.K. students participate in academic study or work experience programmes in China by 2020.

Mr. Cable made the announcement on a visit to Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, where he also announced that the Chinese university had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the University of Glasgow and CBI member The University of Warwick to offer student exchanges.

The University of Glasgow will be welcoming medical student exchanges, and the University of Warwick's student exchanges will be in the areas of systems biology, nursing, digital pathology, and integrated healthcare systems.

Mr. Cable said, "The global centre of gravity is shifting eastwards to major economic powerhouses like China. But while China sends around 100,000 students each year to the U.K., we send little more than 5,000 in the opposite direction – and that's two-thirds more than we sent in 2010.

"By contrast, France sends over 8,000 students to China annually.

"We must raise our game. New independent research shows that a lack of language skills in the U.K. is costing our economy about £48 billion. The shortage of Mandarin speakers is part of the problem. I don't want young British people to get left behind.

"So today, I've written to a range of leading U.K. businesses urging them to get behind the British Council's Generation U.K. campaign, which aims to increase the number of U.K. people studying or undertaking internships in China to 80,000 by 2020.

"Participants in this programme will not only boost their own career prospects, but become ambassadors for U.K.-China relations on their return home."

Carma Elliot, Director of the British Council in China, said, "Generation U.K. creates incredible opportunities and access for young people in the U.K. to experience life in China's rapidly growing economy. By coming to China to work or study, U.K. students develop a global mind-set and gain international experience and skills that will enable them to thrive in a globally competitive labour market."

"Last week the U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron led the biggest-ever British trade mission to China on a three-day visit.

CBI Director-General John Cridland and a large number of CBI members were part of the business delegation.

Key agreements and business deals announced by CBI members during the visit included:

• Jaguar Land Rover opens new Beijing Training Academy and signs £4.5 billion agreement for 100,000 car sales: CBI member Jaguar Land Rover opened its new Training Academy in Beijing, the second such facility to open in China. In addition, Jaguar Land Rover signed a new agreement to provide 100,000 cars to the National Sales Company in China over the next year. Read more here and here.
• Premier League and Chinese Super League sign agreement to build up football at an elite, youth, and community level in China: CBI member The Premier League announced a formal partnership with the Chinese Super League (CSL), under which the Premier League will provide assistance to the CSL and the Chinese Football Association (CFA) on initiatives, programmes, and projects to promote and develop football in China. In return, the CSL will provide assistance to the Premier League and its clubs in promotion and marketing in China, as well as staging matches and other business initiatives in the country. In addition, the Premier League also announced that Premier Skills, which is run by the Premier League and the British Council, had celebrated the fifth anniversary of its work in China with a showcase event in Beijing and the announcement of a new partnership with the Chinese Ministry of Education that aims to reach more than one million young people with its community and school coach training programmes. • Rolls-Royce wins additional US$28 million contract to strengthen role in China’s energy infrastructure: CBI member Rolls-Royce announced a US$28 million contract to supply PetroChina with equipment and services to expand the flow of natural gas through the Lunnan-Tulufan branch of the second West to East Pipeline Project (WEPP II). The Lunnan-Tulufan pipeline branch transports 17 billion cubic metres of gas per year and connects Lines I and II of WEPP that links China's western Xinjiang region to Fujian province in the southeast. • BSI signs deal with Standardisation Administration of China: CBI member BSI signed an agreement with China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine (AQSIQ) and the Standardisation Administration of China (SAC) on the mutual recognition of voluntary standards for business and industry. This Memorandum of Understanding will enable British Standards to be more widely accepted in China. Under the agreement, the U.K. will be able to request that the Chinese adopt the British Standard for specific products and services. This will remove the need for a British company to demonstrate that it has met the equivalent Chinese standard—a breakthrough for U.K.-China trade—and will facilitate market access, saving time and money, and delivering real competitive advantage. • Shell and China’s Development Research Council sign agreement to carry out second two-year energy policy study: CBI member Shell and the Development Research Council, the key policy think tank under China's State Council, signed an agreement to carry out a second two-year energy policy study. Earlier this year, their first joint study made far-reaching recommendations for opening up and reforming China's huge energy sector. Phase 2 will focus on gas policy and energy security.
• University of Nottingham announces £60 million worth of new initiatives in China: CBI member The University of Nottingham announced £60 million worth of new initiatives with China during the PM’s visit. The initiatives included the creation of a new Guangdong-Nottingham Advanced Finance Institute, a new International Academy for Marine Economy and Technology, and a major expansion at the University’s Ningbo campus. • King’s College London forms partnership with Peking University Health Sciences Centre: King’s College London signed a partnership with Peking University Health Sciences Centre (PUHSC) as part of an initiative to expand collaborative activities in China and build links for medical research and education. The new partnership between King's and PUHSC will allow both institutions to develop their co-operation by facilitating staff and student exchanges, exploring the possibility of joint collaborative research projects and joint PhD supervision and exchanging relevant information and academic publications. The partnership will allow King's to expand its joint research and exchange activities in China in the areas of health, medicine, and life sciences, complimenting the university's existing strategic partnership with Renmin University, which covers humanities, social sciences, and law. • Cardiff University announces plans to establish Cancer Research Centre with Beijing’s Capital Medical University: CBI member Cardiff University announced plans to establish a £6.5 million Cancer Research Centre in collaboration with Beijing's Capital Medical University.
• Lancaster University’s Memorandum of Understanding with Guangdong Provincial Office of Science and Technology: CBI member Lancaster University announced a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Guangdong Provincial Office of Science and Technology as part of a five-year partnership. Although not a legally-binding document, the MoU outlines aims by both parties to increase the level of partnerships between U.K. and Chinese technological companies through collaborative research projects leading to the development and commercialisation of new products and services for global markets. • MIRA awarded contracts by Geely to consult on design of their new vehicle project: CBI member MIRA was awarded contracts worth in excess of £2 million by Chinese automotive manufacturer Geely to consult on the design of their vehicle project. This is phase two of a partnership between MIRA and Geely.
• Benoy showcases its work across China and discusses new projects opening in Shanghai, Beijing, and Chengdu: CBI member Benoy showcased its work across China and discussed a number of new Benoy projects opening in Shanghai, Beijing, and Chengdu. These launches will further Benoy's recent good news in the wider China region, following a number of wins at MIPIM Asia and ReCon Asia for Hysan Place, Lan Kwai Fong Wuxi, K11 Art Mall, iAPM Mall, and Jing An Kerry Centre. Benoy’s Chairman, Graham Cartledge CBE, accompanied Prime Minister David Cameron to WE City in Chengdu, a mixed-use scheme. Benoy has been appointed Architect for the retail element of WE City as well as Façade Designer and Interior Designer for a number of the other components. Read more here.

New Chinese investments in the U.K. included:

• Geely reaffirms commitment to invest in London taxi project: Geely reaffimed its commitment to invest into the London taxi project to bring a new green TX5 taxi model into production over the next five years by increasing its investment figure from £150 million to £180 million. Geely confirmed that £80 million of this will go into the U.K., including £30 million for a new manufacturing facility and approximately £50 million for R&D on the next generation of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and electric vehicles. As a result of ongoing increased production, Geely hopes to increase its workforce at regional sites in the U.K.
• Chang’an Automobile announces plans to invest £60 million in West Midlands: Chang’an Automobile announced that it will invest £60 million and create 300 jobs at a new European R&D Centre in the West Midlands.

• Prime Minister supports E.U. free trade deal with China: At a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, the Prime Minister made clear he is ready to put his full political weight behind an agreement to liberalise trade between the E.U. and China—the world's largest trading bloc and China's biggest trading partner. • VisitBritain’s China Welcome campaign: Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport Maria Miller announced an initiative aimed at making Britain the most welcoming destination in Europe for Chinese visitors. VisitBritain's China Welcome campaign, launching in spring 2014, will showcase, promote, and develop how the U.K. travel industry caters to the needs of Chinese visitors. Read more here.
• New U.K.-China cultural agreement: Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport Maria Miller and Chinese Minister for Culture, Minister Cai Wu, signed a new cultural agreement for a five-year programme of cultural exchanges, which will give a boost to cultural and creative exchanges between the U.K. and China. • New £200 million joint research fund: China and the U.K. announced a new £200 million joint research fund, which will boost innovation.
• New digital alliance: UKTI signed an MoU with the China Industry-University Research Investment and Financing Union to bring together a digital media and entertainment alliance with key industry and financial institutions from the U.K. and China. The Alliance aims to facilitate trade, collaboration, and investment worth a potential £2 billion. Chinese companies in the Alliance include Future TV (Tencent/CNTV partnership), Shanghai Digital Industry Group, GDEA Ltd., Bank of China, and Beijing Zhongqing Venture Capital Management Inc. U.K. companies include BBC Worldwide, TalkTalk, Pinewood Studios, Tenshi, Eidos/Square-enix, Freeformers, and Founders Forum.
• U.K. eases visa rules: The U.K. announced same day visa services for business visitors to the U.K.
• UKTI initiates MoU with China’s Alibaba: UKTI initiated an MoU with China’s mega shopping platform Alibaba. The agreement will see Alibaba’s TMall allocate a dedicated team to support U.K. brands and help U.K. companies find agents and distributors in China, increasing their visibility in the Chinese market.

CBI welcomes Sir Mike Rake as new President

 

CBI members endorsed the appointment of Sir Mike Rake as President at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting in London today (Monday). He succeeds Sir Roger Carr following the end of his two-year term.

John Cridland, CBI Director-General, said:

“Sir Roger has been an outstanding President and a strong advocate for business, championing important issues such as corporate governance, boardroom diversity and business reputation.

“I am pleased to welcome Sir Mike to the CBI as our new President. His broad business knowledge and experience, both in the UK and internationally, will be of huge value to the organisation.

Sir Mike said:

“I am both honoured and proud to be appointed CBI President at this important time for our country.

“There are some critical long-term decisions to be taken during the next few years which will have a major impact on the ability of UK business to secure economic growth and create new jobs for our young people. The CBI will have an important role to play in shaping well-informed public debate and I look forward to working alongside John and the team to ensure the voice of business is heard and understood.”

Sir Mike is Chairman of BT Group plc, Deputy Chairman of Barclays plc and has recently stepped down as Chairman of easyJet plc after three years. He is also a director of McGraw-Hill Inc. He chairs the Henley Festival; is Vice-President of the RNIB; and a member of the Board of the Transatlantic Business Council.

Sir Mike has previously held a number of senior roles, as the first Chairman of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills from 2007-2010 and Chairman of Business in the Community from 2004-2007. From May 2002 – September 2007, Sir Mike was Chairman of KPMG International, prior to which he was Chairman of KPMG in Europe and Senior Partner of KPMG in the UK.

BT Chairman Sir Mike Rake appointed CBI President-Designate

 

 

   

The CBI announced today (Tuesday) that Sir Mike Rake is to succeed Sir Roger Carr as President at the end of his term of office in June 2013. CBI members will be asked to endorse his appointment as President at the annual general meeting.

Commenting on Sir Mike’s appointment, Sir Roger Carr said:

“Sir Mike will be a great addition to the CBI team. His extensive international business experience across a wide variety of sectors will be hugely valuable and make him an excellent choice for the role
of President.

“I am confident that Director-General, John Cridland, and Sir Mike will work well together and that the voice of business will continue to be both authoritative and clear.”

The CBI President plays a leading role in the organisation’s advocacy work, meeting with ministers and senior civil servants, promoting UK business internationally and chairing the CBI Board.

It is an unpaid appointment.

Sir Mike added: “I am delighted to have been asked to take on the role of President of the CBI at this critical stage of economic development.

“The CBI provides an objective apolitical view on those matters which are most important from a business perspective, ensuring the economy can start to grow and create jobs, particularly for the young.

“I very much look forward to working with John Cridland and to continuing the excellent work carried out by Sir Roger.”

CBI President Sir Roger Carr to visit China 02-08 Nov

 

The CBI's President, Sir Roger Carr, will be visiting China from 02-08 November. During his week-long trip he will visit Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai with his trip culminating in the British Business Awards Gala Dinner in Shanghai on Thursday 08 November.

In addition to meetings with member companies and engagements with key stakeholders Sir Roger will be speaking at a series of British Business Luncheons hosted in Hong Kong on 02 November and in Shanghai on 07 November respectively.

UK Export Plan published by CBI and Ernst & Young

The CBI and Ernst & Young have published a major new report titled "Winning overseas: boosting business export performance."

According to the report, introducing a credible new exports strategy, which focuses on the right products and services, concentrates efforts on high-growth markets, and breaks down domestic barriers, could give the UK economy a £20 billion lift by 2020.

The report urges the UK Government to set out a clear exports strategy with ambitious, achievable performance targets. The Government should aim to increase net exports from -2.4% in 2010 to 2.5% by 2016, with exports rising from 29% of GDP in 2010 to 36% by 2016. Small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) have some of the most potential to grow so the UK should aim to match the EU average of having one in four SMEs exporting by 2020, compared with only one in five currently.

John Cridland, CBI Director-General, said, "The UK has a proud history as a great trading nation, but in recent years our performance has been lacklustre. Exports success will be one of the key drivers of growth, but for too long we have been over-dependent on advanced economies for our trade.

"The continued crisis in the Eurozone underlines just how important it is for the UK to diversify its export efforts to high-growth countries. Given that we're already playing catch-up with many of our competitors, we must act now or never to target high-growth economies, leapfrog the competition, and deliver our growth potential.

"We need to capitalise on the booming success of the BRIC countries, and look beyond the curve to future high-growth markets such as Indonesia, Mexico, and Turkey. The new middle classes in emerging economies will have needs that our niche, high-end producers are more than able to fill."

Steve Varley, Ernst & Young UK & Ireland Managing Partner, said, "Our inability to break into and succeed in high-growth markets is due to a historic mismatch between the goods and services we currently sell and those demanded by high-growth economies.

"Demand in the last decade from the BRICs has been for manufacturing goods, including machinery, tools and equipment, but in many cases UK companies haven't been strongly positioned enough to compete globally to win this business.

"With the changing demographics in high growth markets, including the rise in the middle classes and consumer spending levels, now is the time for the UK to seize the opportunity to build on its comparative advantage in sectors such as construction services, communication services, electrical goods, optical and high-tech goods, and financial services.

"By tailoring products to specific markets, supported by strong high-quality business intelligence, guiding them every step of the way, businesses can enhance their export performance and boost the UK economy."

The CBI/Ernst & Young report sets out a joint action plan for achieving exports success. It urges the Government to:

     • Introduce an 'export enabling test' for all new legislation
     • Increase the availability of export credit by diversifying the ways in which firms, especially SMEs can 
       access ECGD products
     • Ensure greater commercial focus in UKTI by introducing 50% business appointments on its board
     • Use skills policy to help businesses remain innovative and internationally competitive, by promoting 
       the study of STEM and language subjects at school
     • Resolve the need for more hub and regional airport capacity
     • Introduce a single portal www.exports.gov.uk through which businesses can access all government 
       export services

And commits the CBI to:

     • Establish an export finance taskforce to explore ways of removing barriers to finance, reducing risk 
       and the viability of introducing an export tax credit to incentivise exploratory export activity, which will 
       report in 2012
     • Help develop regional exports clubs to share knowledge and experience
     • Celebrate the exports success of its members

CBI Annual Conference 2011

The CBI Annual Conference 2011 will be held on 21 November in London at the Grosvenor House Hotel. Our focus this year will be 'Accelerating Growth' — breaking and entering new markets.

The CBI has lined up an impressive array of international business leaders and politicians who will participate in a stimulating blend of keynote addresses, panel debates, and answer sessions. Guests will have the opportunity to learn, ask questions, and network.
