The CBI’s Director-General is visiting China this week on a trade visit with the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Theresa May.

Carolyn Fairbairn, CBI Director-General, said:

UK Ahead Of The Curve In China Investment Strategy - CBI

UK is China’s second largest European trading partner  

The UK is shifting its investment into inner regions of China and into new sectors, ahead of the curve of other nations, according to the CBI’s first ever Sterling Assets China report.

In 2016, the UK was China’s second largest trading partner in the European Union (behind only Germany) and the eighth worldwide, doing £55 billion worth of trade in goods with China. Indeed, after the USA and Germany it is the only country in the list of China’s top nine trading partners not in the Asia Pacific region.

The UK also ranks eighth in terms of foreign direct investment (FDI) into China over the last decade, at £4 billion. However, unlike other nations, Great Britain is shifting its focus from coastal to inland provinces, which have historically received a smaller share of FDI, so as to mirror the Chinese government’s Belt and Road development plans. Over half (57%) of British investment in 2015 (over £880 million) went to inland regions, led by Heilongjiang (£313 million) in the north east and Henan (£276 million) in the centre.

Of the £18.1 billion worth of UK exports to China in 2015, Shanghai tops the list (£4.2 billion), followed by Beijing (£2.4 billion) and Guangdong (£1.3 billion). 21% of British exports to China were in transport technology (automotive, rail, air and maritime), 12% in machinery & electrical, 8% in chemical products and 5% in metals. The UK’s top service export was travel (£1.5 billion), with 270,000 Chinese visiting the UK and 91,000 Chinese students enrolling in British universities – far more than from any other country.

By making inroads into China’s lesser economically known regions, the UK stands to profit from China’s move from manufacturing and infrastructure into technology and services.”

“Supporting UK-based companies to invest and operate overseas and become global businesses is part of our strategy to expand mutually beneficial trading relationships around the world. This is especially so in China, the world’s second largest and fastest growing economy.

“This report showcases a wide range of British investment and highlights the strengths and growing confidence of British companies. Investment in China by British companies can generate wealth for the UK, support British jobs, help build UK-based supply chains, and support China’s own economic development.

“As we continue to address the challenges for businesses investing across the globe and help them to make the most of opportunities, positive and proactive engagement of UK and Chinese businesses remains vitally important.”

Between 2015 and 2016, greenfield project investment into China exceeded £2.25 billion. The financial services sector saw the highest value investments (£488 million), followed by logistics (£292 million), consumer products (£268 million) and business services (£209 million).

GSK partners with Ali Health to launch China online health platform

 

CBI member GSK China and Ali Health jointly announced a strategic partnership to launch an innovative adult vaccination service system. The system will include online disease education and consultation, online HCP appointment booking, and deliver convenient online-to-offline (O2O) end-to-end service for users.

Moreover, community healthcare service centres nationwide can utilise this platform to manage vaccination enquiries and requests. This will help enhance efficiency at the centres and help reduce costs and workload, thus optimising public healthcare institutions’s resources.

By year-end, the platform is expected to cover 1500 community healthcare service centres in more than one hundred cities nationwide, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Wuhan. As living standard improves, people’s approach of healthcare has been gradually shifting from "disease treatment" to "disease prevention".

However, there is still a lack of adequate disease prevention awareness among the general public, including knowledge of the means and pathways of disease prevention. For example, many adults are not fully aware of the government’s immunisation programmes that are available to them, or which healthcare institutions offer disease-preventing vaccination services. Innovative adult disease prevention service was created to cater exactly to this large unmet need.

CBBC Great British Brands Festival in China 2015

 

The China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) Great British Brands Festival series of events focuses exclusively on selling U.K. products in China.

It provides an important opportunity for companies to showcase and sell their products to Chinese consumers in eight cities.

Following its success in Beijing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou in 2014, the festival is expanding across China, with eight events provisionally planned for 2015 in Chongqing (April), Changchun (May), Beijing (June), Changsha (July), Urumqi (August), Shenzhen (September), Chengdu (October), and Guangzhou (November).

There will also be opportunities to take part in associated events in Hangzhou, Qingdao, Shanghai, Wuhan, and other cities as part of CBBC’s retail-focused China Consumer programme.

CBI Member UPS opens new healthcare facility in Hangzhou

 

CBI member UPS recently opened its new healthcare facility in Hangzhou, a move that represents a significant expansion of its Asia healthcare distribution network.

The advanced facility has leading technology to maintain product safety and integrity, and is designed to offer seamless global solutions to healthcare companies looking to expand into, transport within, and export from China.

The facility consists of 22,000 square metres of dedicated healthcare space, and is designed to meet the specific storage and distribution needs of pharmaceutical companies.

With this facility, UPS aims to introduce a new and efficient business model into the Chinese market. This model is designed to reduce costs in the supply chain, negating the need for healthcare companies to build and invest in their own distribution warehouses.

Richard Loi, President of UPS China, said, "With many healthcare companies demanding rigorous supply chain solutions in China. The UPS Hangzhou facility, along with our existing Shanghai medical device facility, will speed products to key markets within China, and underscores UPS's commitment to strengthening our China network."

Boeing's new China technology centre jets ahead with green biofuel research

 

CBI member Boeing's new technology centre with Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) recently announced that Hangzhou Energy Engineering and Technology Co. Ltd. (HEET) will conduct the centre's first research project.

HEET will focus on ways to convert discarded cooking oil into a component of sustainable aviation biofuel at the Boeing-COMAC Aviation Energy Conservation and Emissions Reductions Technology Centre, which is based at COMAC's new Beijing Aeronautical Science and Technology Research Institute (BASTRI).

The project aims to identify contaminants in waste cooking oil and processes that may treat and clean it for use as jet fuel. The focus of the project for the first year will be to demonstrate the feasibility of achieving significant cost reductions by converting waste cooking oil and other waste oils into jet fuel through the improvement of conversion efficiency and associated technology.

Dong Yang Wu, Vice President of Boeing Research & Technology, China, said, "HEET is a strong partner for the Boeing-COMAC technology centre's 'gutter oil' research project. We are excited about opportunities to partner with leading research capabilities in China to accelerate the global push for renewable jet fuels and support commercial aviation's growth while reducing its environmental footprint."

Qin Fuguang, President of BASTRI, COMAC, said, "As one of the member organisations of COMAC, BASTRI was built for carrying out civil aviation industry research, and we aim at expanding knowledge in sustainable aviation biofuels and carbon emissions reduction. China is the world's fastest-growing aviation market and the biggest consumer of cooking oil. There's great potential for converting the waste cooking oil into sustainable aviation fuel. It's a good opportunity for Boeing, HEET, and COMAC to work together and make efforts to protect the environment."

HP's 'In China For China' education innovation fund

CBI member Hewlett-Packard (HP) recently announced the establishment of an Education Innovation Fund in China, which will support teacher training through a US$1 million donation to Zhejiang University and the National Commission of the PRC for United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The fund's aim is to increase the use of information, communication, and technology (ICT) solutions to improve education outcomes in China.

Over two years, more than 5,000 teachers from 500 rural and urban schools in Hangzhou and Chengdu will be trained through the fund. Teachers will learn how to use ICT effectively and innovatively in classrooms.

HP's project will directly contribute to the implementation of China's National Medium and Long-term Strategy for Education Planning and Development (2011-2020) by supporting the Chinese government's aim to improve education through the innovative use of ICT in teaching.

Gabi Zedlmayer, Vice President, Sustainability and Social Innovation, HP, said, "HP has always believed that the success of businesses and the overall well-being of society are interdependent. Through our partnership with Zhejiang University and the National Commission of the People's Republic of China for UNESCO, HP's scale, network, and technological strengths can uniquely contribute to China's education innovation and reform."
