Arup design - building bridges and brands across Asia

CBI member, Arup has published its 2019 edition of The Arup Journal. The journal contains two key features that may be of interest to China Direct readers.

Arup played a key role in designing the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macau Bridge, the world’s longest sea crossing, connecting over 70 million across China’s Greater Bay Area. The construction consultancy also recently completed a new headquarters for one of South Korea’s biggest cosmetics labels, Amorepacific.

Case study: Strengthening connections: Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macau Bridge

On 23 October 2018, Chinese President Xi Jinping opened the world’s longest sea crossing, the 55km Hong Kong-Zhuhai- Macao Bridge. Until then, travelling between Hong Kong and Macao/Zhuhai involved either a one-hour ferry ride (sometimes through bad weather conditions) or a four-hour detour over the Humen Bridge, a crossing to the north of the Pearl River Delta. With the opening of the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macau Bridge (HZMB), it is now possible to make the journey by car in a mere 40 minutes.

Arup performed a range of roles on the project, including creating and developing the concept and preliminary design for the main bridge and tunnel, and proposing environmentally friendly reclamation solutions for artificial island construction. Arup also worked on roads, tunnels, viaducts and other associated infrastructure. Along the way, the firm had to be mindful of the scheme’s impact on the surrounding environment and wildlife, the effect of extreme weather conditions on the programme and design, and the logistical challenges of coordinating and completing such a large and ambitious scheme – the HZMB took nine years to construct.

Case study: Beauty & Innovation: A sustainable modern building that draws on traditional Korean design for one of Asia’s largest cosmetics companies

Arup has delivered a new headquarters for one of the largest beauty and cosmetics companies in South Korea, Amorepacific. The new building is an elegant 110m tall cube centred around a courtyard, part of which is glazed to provide natural light into the atrium below. With its striking outer façade of vertical fins, the building is a distinctive and innovative take on office accommodation.

Inspired by references to traditional Korean courtyard architecture and with energy efficiency and wellbeing at the centre of its design, the building is punctuated by three large openings on the 5th, 11th and 17th floors. These are landscaped with gardens and terraces, and open onto an inner central courtyard that features a reflecting pool. The openings allow natural light and ventilation to enter the heart of the building, and frame dramatic views across Seoul.

Arup is sky high with latest China project

CBI member, Arup recently completed work on the 392m “Bamboo-shoot’ Building in the Shenzhen Bay Area. Officially known as China Resources Headquarters, Arup’s latest skyscraper stands at 67 storeys tall and is held up by an innovative structural system of external slender columns.

Arup partnered with the US architect KPF on the design of the building, and was directly responsible for the structural engineering, geotechnics, façade design and fire safety strategy.

The building is particularly notable because it is the first time that a building has been built utilising external columns rather than a traditional mega-column within a seismic area.

The building has a sculpted form of 56 external slender columns stemming from the diagrids at the bottom and converging into a crystal cap at the top. This outer-shell is complemented by a core-structure system which does away with strengthened storeys. The result is a system that is more efficient in vertical force transmission, making the ‘bamboo-shoot’ more resistant to typhoons and earthquake. This new method of structural engineering is also more cost-effective and requires a shorter construction period.

Arup tested the new engineering system to ensure that it was sufficiently wind-resistant to be built in a typhoon area. This involved using advanced structural optimisation technologies to test models and running simulations to fine-tune the design and improve the skyscrapers behaviour under different wind loads. This allowed Arup to visualise the steelwork fabrication, identify potential problems during the construction and resolve them all in advance. After rigorous testing, outrigger dampers were added to the steelwork to reduce wind-induced vibrations and create a more comfortable environment for occupants.

The building Is not only innovative in its approaches to structural engineering however, it is also very aesthetically pleasing. By pushing the weight of the building onto external columns rather than rely on a mega-column, the architects have managed to produce a very slender form for the building. This also means that the interior is column free which increases the net floor area.

Arup cleans up in Hong Kong & on track in Singapore

CBI member Arup has published its 2018 edition of The Arup Journal. The journal contains two key features that may be of interest to China Direct readers.

Arup has been leading on major upgrades to Hong Kong’s sewage system, providing nearly 6 million Hong Kong residents with a modernised and future-proofed sewage system, and has also delivered the new Singapore MTR Downtown Line.

Case study: Sewage treatment works with a social impact

Since 2007, Arup has been advising on the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS), which aims to restore Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour to 1980s levels of pollution. HATS was commissioned by the Hong Kong government in 2015, and Arup delivered on the project last year.

Victoria Harbour used to provide the backdrop for the Cross-Harbour Swim, inaugurated in 1906. The swim was one of the city’s largest sporting events but was halted in 1978 because the harbour water was deemed too hazardous to swim in. At the time, up to 2 million m²of sewage, with only a very minimal level of treatment, was discharged straight into the harbour every day, with serious consequences for the environment. As well as the race being abandoned, nearby sand beaches had to be closed due to poor sanitation.

Arup was the lead consultant on HATS, and in October 2017 the beaches finally re-opened whilst 3,000 people took to the harbour water to race in the first Cross-Harbour Swim for 39 years.

Arup was responsible for delivering a new sewage processing plant and bringing the entire city’s sewage capacity up to 4 million m² per day. This was achieved by setting up one of the biggest plants of its kind on Hong Kong’s Stonecutters Island and diverting Hong Kong’s sewage from Victoria Island towards this new centre.

Case study: A new phase for transport in Singapore

Arup has delivered one of the most technically challenging projects ever undertaken in Singapore, the Downtown Line for the city-state’s metro system.

By 2030, the Singapore government aims for 80% of households to be within a 10-minute walk of a metro station. A key part of the strategy for achieving this is a significant expansion of the city-state’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, a vital part of its transport infrastructure that is used by more than three million people every day.

In October 2017, the final phase of the latest line to be added to the network was opened. One of the most technically challenging underground projects ever undertaken in Singapore, the Downtown Line Stage 3 (DTL3) comprises 16 stations linked by 21km of tunnels. It connects the central business district with the eastern residential areas of Bedok and Tampines.

Arup’s involvement in the project began in 2008, when the firm undertook alignment design for the entire length of DTL3.

The company had to divert a river, design a new type of siding and introduce a new steel in-forced concrete that had never been used in South-east Asia.

Beijing's tallest building reaches for the sky - with help from CBI member Arup

With the last steel beam lifted up to the sky, the tallest building in Beijing, China Zun topped out successfully on 22 August. China Zun Tower stands out in the capital city’s Central Business District opposite another well-known Arup project – the CCTV Headquarters.

CBI member Arup has acted as the structural and geotechnical engineer for the project since 2011, as well as providing fire and security consultancy. Arup engineered a highly efficient tube-in-tube structural system composed of perimeter mega structure and reinforced concrete core.

The current elegant curved shape was also the result of many scheme study runs. The geometric complexity was further combined with the challenge of engineering a viable seismic structural system for such a tall building with its unique enlarged zun-top.

Arup reveals future cities vision at Hong Kong 40th anniversary celebration

CBI member Arup revealed its vision for future cities and launched a mentorship programme to mark its 40 years in Hong Kong. The dedicated event, themed ‘Our Future City’, was held on 22 April at the Rotunda, Exchange Square, Central, attracting more than 200 guests from across sectors including senior government officials, clients, and working partners.

Through a unique live performance of visual, light, and sound, Arup pointed an overarching direction to design future cities – Smart Green Resilient, and navigated visitors through different aspects of future urban living, from buildings and transport to energy and air quality.

The event also witnessed the kick off of the yearlong ‘20+20’ mentorship programme. Under the scheme, 20 Arup staff will be mentors to 20 Secondary 5 students, giving advice and guidance on education and career goals. In a series of meet-ups, creative workshops, and shadowing activities, the students will be exposed to the engineering profession and wider community and develop a vision for their own future.

Outstanding students will also receive scholarships to continue their higher education.

Hong Kong International Airport in full operation - with design & construction support from Arup & Mott Macdonald

CBI member Arup announced that, after more than five years of design and construction, the Midfield Concourse at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is in full operation.

Located to the west of Terminal 1 and between the two existing runways at the airport, the five-level concourse has a total floor area of 105,000 square metres, with ceiling heights comparable to those of Terminal 1.

There are 20 aircraft parking stands, 19 of which are bridge-served, including two Code F (A380) stands. Passengers will also be connected to Terminal 1 via an extended automated people mover (APM).

A joint venture between Arup and CBI member Mott MacDonald has been working on the detailed design of this project since June 2010, providing full multidisciplinary design and construction support. Its scope of services is wide-ranging and includes structure, MEP, airport systems, façade, sustainability, APM, fire, baggage handling system, acoustics, logistics, and project management.

The joint venture has been supported by the architect Aedas, who has also worked closely with OTC Limited on the planning of the Concourse. Mott MacDonald and Arup have worked together on many similar projects, including Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 1 and Heathrow Terminal 5, and individually have played key roles in many major airport projects around the world.
