Alliance Boots today announces that it has completed the acquisition of a 12% stake in Nanjing Pharmaceutical Company Limited.
The completion follows receipt of government and regulatory approvals. As a result of the investment, Alliance Boots becomes the second largest shareholder of the company with the right to nominate Board members and a member of the senior management.
In September 2012, Alliance Boots announced its intention to invest in Nanjing Pharmaceutical Company Limited through a private placement, for a total consideration of approximately £56 million (RMB560 million).
Alliance Boots first entered the Chinese market in 2008 through its joint venture, Guangzhou Pharmaceuticals Corporation, which operates in complementary geographies and continues its successful development.

CBI member Alliance Boots recently released its preliminary results for the year ended 31 March 2012, reporting revenue up 18.4% to £23 billion and underlying profit after tax up 10.2% to £693 million.
Alliance Boots continued to grow strongly in China as Guangzhou Pharmaceuticals Corporation, its joint venture in the country, made several acquisitions during the year to strengthen its position in key regional provinces. The joint venture performed well with good revenue growth, margin management, and control over costs, enabling the business to significantly improve profitability.
Commenting on Alliance Boots' preliminary results, Stefano Pessina, Executive Chairman, said, "Alliance Boots has again delivered double digit growth in trading profit while at the same time generating a strong operating cash flow to fund investment in growth and substantially reduce net borrowings. This performance, which reflects the excellent work of our teams, has been achieved through a combination of organic growth and benefits from the previous year's acquisitions, is particularly encouraging given the challenging economic environment.
"In the coming year, we expect the economic environment to remain difficult with continuing pressure on both consumer and governmental expenditure. This will generate both challenges and new opportunities for us.
"We are confident about our future prospects and ability to pursue profitable growth, both organically and through further international expansion. This will be supported by our strong operating cash flow and secure funding arrangements, which will enable us to continue to invest while at the same time reducing net borrowings. The development of new and existing partnerships will be a key component of our future growth."

Earlier this week, leading British pharmacy-led health and beauty group and CBI member Alliance Boots announced that it had signed a letter of intent with Nanjing Pharmaceutical Group Limited to acquire a stake in the Chinese company.
Nanjing Pharmaceutical Group Limited is the largest shareholder in Nanjing Pharmaceutical Company Limited, one of the leading pharmaceutical wholesalers in China.
According to a filing by Nanjing Pharmaceutical Group to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the planned cooperation between the two companies will help Nanjing Pharmaceutical Company Limited further develop its innovative capabilities and become a leading pharmaceutical retailer.
Future steps taken by Alliance Boots and Nanjing Pharmaceutical Group Limited following the letter of intent will be subject to regulatory and government approval in China. Both companies believe their cooperation will make a significant contribution to the planned healthcare reforms in China over the next decade.

CBI Director General, Richard Lambert, has today completed his three day visit to Beijing.
During his 72 hour visit Richard met with China's senior government leadership including Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Wang Qishan, co-led the 42 company strong UK business delegation and visited CBI member company BT's central Beijing HQ for the launch of its customer innovation centre.
A private CBI members breakfast was also held in Richard's honour focusing on the current business environment. Attendees included members Shell, Goodrich, UPS, Alliance Boots, Experian, BA, Diageo and the FT.
The CBI received extensive coverage in both the UK and Chinese media during Richard's visit.
