Unpacking the IPEF
Please join the CSIS Economics Program and Scholl Chair in International Business for a virtual public event to discuss the roll-out of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) on Thursday, June 2nd from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM ET.
At a public event in Tokyo on May 23rd, President Biden and 12 regional counterparts officially launched the IPEF amongst a hybrid meeting of participating leaders. This announcement comes five years after the United States withdrew from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The IPEF is intended to reassert U.S. economic engagement in a vital region and provide a U.S.-led alternative to China’s economic statecraft in the region. Though no new binding commitments were made in Tokyo under this framework, the long-awaited launch formally kicked off the centerpiece economic initiative of the Biden administration’s Indo-Pacific strategy.
This event will feature remarks from Amb. Sarah Bianchi, Deputy United States Trade Representative. CSIS experts Matthew P. Goodman and Bill Reinsch will lead a conversation on the IPEF rollout. Additional speakers will be announced soon.
This event is made possible through general support to CSIS.
