CBI members, Vodafone and Huawei have confirmed that they will continue to work together on the development and roll out of 5G infrastructure across the UK.
Vodafone confirmed at the launch of the company’s 5G service on Tuesday, that it is maintaining the use of Huawei equipment in non-core parts of its network infrastructure, even though Huawei officially remains under government review.
On Tuesday, Vodafone launched 5G in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool and London. Twelve more cities are expected to follow soon.
Business director of Vodafone UK, Anne Sheehan, said: “5G is a game-changer for the economy and UK businesses. We are committed to helping our customers take advantage of this technology by making it widely available in the UK and through roaming. [Vodafone] want to help UK businesses become global leaders and 5G will play an important role in achieving that aim.”
Victor Zhang, a senior vice-president at Huawei said: “[Huawei] are proud to be helping Vodafone open up a new world of seamless opportunity with their launch of 5G mobile services in the UK. This reinforces the UK as a 5G leader and builds on our 18-year history of supporting the digital economy in the [The UK].”
Vodafone chief technical officer Scott Perry said “[Vodafone] hopes that the UK government stops short of a full ban and allows the use of Huawei technology in peripheral parts of the network.”
5G will bring unprecedented speeds to internet users, with some operations running 10 times faster than on 4G networks. 5G is also expected to unlock potential in a host of new services, including artificial intelligence, robotics, self-driving cars, and the Internet of Things.
